The "Impressum" section is required by German law for all websites owned by persons or businesses physically located in Germany.  Of course, no German law can require such a section for sites belonging to persons or businesses located in other countries, even if the sites are written in German.  But then again, as far as the Web goes, where is inside or outside Germany anyway?  This website and all other websites may be written in any language the author desires and are accessible from inside and outside any and every country, and that at any and every point in time. 

This section is also not exactly the same as "Contact", "Site Credits", "Privacy & Legal", "Disclaimer" or "Terms and Conditions" website sections you may have seen elsewhere.  According to German law, this section must contain complete contact information for the person responsible for the CONTENT of the individual site.  Considering the masses of ugly, tasteless, worthless content floating around in the Net, this is might also be an excellent idea for many sites outside of Germany!
